Three new Savannah arena design concepts were released on Tuesday, with a decision on the final plans expected in the coming months.
Planning is underway to construct a new arena in the Georgia city. The $140 million venue is intended to be the anchor of the Canal District development project west of downtown Savannah, and will be designed by Perkins+Will.
As part of the ongoing planning process, officials staged a public meeting on Tuesday to present three arena design concepts. The designs offer some possibilities on how the arena may look, but Tuesday’s presentation was part of a longer process in formulating the final design. Work on creating the final plans will continue in the lead up to a vote by the Savannah City Council, which is expected to sign off on a design in the coming months. More from the Savannah Morning News:
Following the presentation, the design firm then invited the meeting’s attendees to participate in break out sessions and offer their thoughts on the concepts presented by Perkins+Will so that the favored features could be incorporated into a final design.
Savannah Alderman Van Johnson said the presentations were a start and now it was time for the public to weigh in. Personally, Johnson said he saw elements he liked in all three, but he would have to evaluate them more closely before determining a favorite.
“I think it’s a good starting point for communication and talking,” Johnson said.
In the coming months, the Savannah City Council is expected to approve the final design of the arena, which is being built west of downtown’s Historic District on a city-owned lot northeast of W. Gwinnett Street and Stiles Avenue.
The arena has been pitched as a more modern event space in comparison to Savannah’s aging Civic Center, as well a key feature in a broader development project that could better connect the area surrounding the venue to downtown Savannah. Construction is slated to begin in 2019, with the venue opening in 2021.
