Devils, city in arbitration over Pru Center lease payments

The dispute over exactly how much the New Jersey Devils (NHL) owe in rent for Prudential Center is now before an arbitrator, but we’re guessing things will end up in court, as Devils refuse to divulge revenue numbers needed to make estimates.

To date the Devils have not paid the city of Newark a penny in rent for the two-year-old arena. Part of the problem lies in the terms of the lease, according to this excellent analysis from NJBIZ, which specifies the Devils pay at least $3 million annually for the facility. But the Devils claim city ineptitude at finishing the arena cost them money — but won’t say how much.
