While there is no final agreement, officials indicate that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lease extension negotiations for Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza are progressing.
Professional hockey’s Penguins are playing the 2018-19 AHL season at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on a lease that will expire on June 30. With that deadline approaching, the Penguins have been engaging in negotiations over a potential lease extension with arena owner Luzerne County Convention Center Authority.
While there is no finalized agreement in place, the latest update from the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority board suggests that members are confident that a lease extension will be agreed upon soon. That news surfaced during an authority board meeting Wednesday, after a fan asked board members for an update on the negotiations. More from The Citizens’ Voice:
Chairman Gary Zingaretti told her talks between the parties are going well.
“We and the Penguins have been meeting pretty much every day,” Zingaretti said. “We are very close to a resolution.”
He said a non-disclosure agreement prevented him from discussing specifics of the negotiations.
The Penguins, who are owned by the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, have played at the arena since it opened in 1999.
