Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Lease Discussions Continue

Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins

Discussions on a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins lease extension continue, as the AHL club is approaching the expiration of its current pact for Mohegan Sun Arena.

Currently the Penguins are playing at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on a lease that expires at the end of June. Thus far, the team and arena owner Luzerne County Convention Center Authority have not finalized an extension. However, authority officials indicate that discussions with the organization are ongoing.

The latest update was provided following an authority meeting on Wednesday. One authority member indicated that discussions with the Pittsburgh Penguins–who own the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins–continue, but could not disclose specifics of the negotiations. More from The Citizens’ Voice:

Following the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority’s first meeting of 2019 on Wednesday, member Donna Cupinski said the board is actively in talks with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. However, she was not allowed to give any details per a nondisclosure agreement.

“We’re doing what’s in the best interest of fans, the community and everyone involved,” Cupinski said. “We can’t help the rumors (from circulating).”

The current agreement is set to expire at the end of June. The Penguins are in the middle of their 20th season as a tenant at the facility.

The Penguins have played at the arena since it opened in 1999.
