Hawks to Unveil Renovated State Farm Arena Saturday

The renovated State Farm Arena will be on display Saturday, when the Atlanta Hawks host an open house at the venue.

State Farm Arena–which was known as Philips Arena until a new naming-rights deal with State Farm was announced in August–has undergone a multi-phase, $192.5-million renovation in time for the 2018-19 NBA season. Among some of the changes that took place included major video system upgrades (new video displays, including the first continuous 360-degree video screen in the NBA are shown in the rendering above), new social spaces, technology initiatives, as well as upgraded food and beverage offerings that include a floor-level bar.

The arena closed in April for the latest round of upgrades, but is prepared to reopen for Saturday’s event. More from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

More than 750 workers have been on the job daily this week in a final sprint to get the building ready for its unveiling. As of Wednesday, walls were being painted, fixtures and furnishings were being installed, finishing touches were being applied to the center-hung video board and construction cleanup remained to be done in parts of the building.

“We’ll have some odds and ends as we go through the next couple of weeks – a punch list – that we’ll need to fix and address, as construction projects do,” said Brett Stefansson, the arena’s general manager. “But the building … will be ready for the public Saturday.”

Hawks CEO Steve Koonin said more than 24,000 people have signed up online for free tickets to the open house. The event will begin at noon Saturday and include a brief grand-opening ceremony at center court at 12:40 p.m. Attendees will be able to explore the building.

The event will come ahead of the Hawks’ home opener on Wednesday, October 24 against the Dallas Mavericks. Numerous NBA and NHL arena renovation projects took place leading up to the leagues’ respective 2018-19 seasons, but the broad scope of the State Farm Arena project arguably makes it the most notable of the group. We took a closer look at NBA and NHL arena renovations in a story earlier this week.
