Officials have approved a renovation to Wells Fargo Arena and the construction of a new indoor venue, allowing Arizona State University to move forward with the projects.
The plan that has been under consideration includes major upgrades to Wells Fargo Arena. Through that project, Wells Fargo Arena’s lower bowl will be rebuilt, and the final result will include wider concourses as well as upgraded seating, restrooms, and concessions.
In addition to the Wells Fargo Arena renovation, ASU will move forward with the construction of a new 5,000-seat indoor facility that is designed to multiple sports, including hockey, gymnastics, and wrestling. The Arizona Board of Regents has signed off on those projects, putting them both to track be completed in the coming years. More from Arizona Sports:
Per the executive summary in late January, the 175,000 square-foot arena would seat 5,000 spectators for hockey, wrestling and gymnastics, and would include 250-to-300 club, and 48 loge seats.
The new arena is expected to be completed in time for the 2020-21 season. Wells Fargo Arena’s renovations should be completed by the summer of 2021.
The arena would give the Sun Devils hockey team a true home, as they are currently playing their home games at Oceanside Ice Arena. The location’s capacity is nearly 1,000. ASU does play some of their more notable games at Gila River Arena in Glendale.
Currently, the projects are expected to cost $160 million. This has also not been the first discussion in recent years of building a new ASU hockey venue. ASU was at one point pitched on the idea of obtaining a new hockey arena through a partnership with the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes, but university officials opted early last year to not pursue that partnership.
