The University of Idaho has unveiled the name of its planned new arena, as the venue will be called Idaho Central Credit Union Arena. This is the result of Idaho Central Credit Union’s $10 million contribution to the project.
Idaho has been planning the construction of a new arena that will be used by both its men’s and women’s basketball programs. Information about the proposedvenue has been presented previously, including the planned used of mass timber construction, but on Thursday the university revealed Idaho Central Credit Union’s gift to the new facility.
Additional fundraising for the arena is expected to take place, and university officials are at this point hoping for a 2021 opening. More from The Spokesman-Review:
UI officials and ICCU chief executive Kent Oram announced the gift Thursday.
The donation gives new impetus to fundraising for an uncomman athletic venue built with mass timber construction. The university is now $34 million toward its $45 million goal, according to UI President Chuck Staben. A public campaign to raise the remaining $11 million will take place this year. Ideally, construction will begin in 2019, and Idaho Central Credit Union Arena will be open for the 2021 basketball season.
It will feature a 4200-seat competition floor, a practice court, offices, locker rooms and conference space for both men’s and women’s basketball programs. The amenities for the respective programs will be comparable, Staben said. The building also is suitable for concerts and convocations and should help alleviate demand on other university facilities.
“This wonderful donation from Idaho Central Credit Union to our arena campaign is a game-changing investment for this project, for our university community and for Idaho,” said University of Idaho president Chuck Staben said in a statement. “The naming gift puts us that much closer to completing a stunning facility that represents Idaho excellence. We are so proud to partner with an organization similarly committed to serving this great state.”
“The arena project has been a long time coming. With the help of our Vandal supporters we are seeing this vision become a reality. This arena will bolster the student-athlete experience and create an exciting environment for future generations,” said University of Idaho Director of Athletics Rob Spear said in a statement.
Idaho Central Credit Union will have the arena’s naming rights for 35 years. The architect for Idaho Central Credit Union Arena is Opsis Architecture. Hoffman Construction Company has been named the general contractor of the design-build project.
