Taylor, King close down Mellon Arena

This weekend saw the final performance in Mellon Arena history, as Carole King and James Taylor performed in concert, some 49 years after Judy Garland broke in Civic Arena.

The concert was Saturday night. Judy Garland performed the first concert after the opening on Civic Arena on Oct. 19, 1961; over the years the arena was home to concerts by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Elvis Presley.

Of course, it’s not certain this will be the final concert. The Save the Igloo group is still hard at work on a preservation plan for the unique arena; there will be a rally in coming days as well as a public hearing on the fate of the arena. Currently there are no firm plans for the facility; the Pittsburgh Penguins, who control development rights to the site, are proposing tearing the arena down and replacing it with a mixed-use development.
