State judge gives final approval to Nets arena eminent domain

The state of New York can use the power of eminent domain to acquire the final 12 parcels for the Atlantic Yards project; a groundbreaking for the new Nets arena has been tentatively scheduled for March 11.

The state of New York can use the power of eminent domain to acquire the final 12 parcels for the Atlantic Yards project, according to a ruling handed down by a state judge today.

Atlantic Yards is an ambitious $4.9-billion office, residential, retail and hotel project slated for the heart of Brooklyn, with a new New Jersey Nets (NBA) arena as the centerpiece. Developer Bruce Ratner has run into several obstacles in his quest to build the development, but the ruling today — subject to appeal, of course — would seem to go a long ways toward settling the issue.

Meanwhile, a groundbreaking for the new Nets arena has been tentatively scheduled for March 11.
