Voters will be asked to approve $168 million for a new Haymarket arena in downtown Lincoln.
It's now up to the voters.
Lincoln residents will go to the polls on May 12 to approve new taxes for a $168-million arena in the Haymarket area of downtown. The new arena, slated to be the home of the University of Nebraska mens' and womens' basketball teams, would be funded by new taxes on restaurants, bars, hotels and car rentals. It would seat 16,000.
To say this is a major project that could drastically impact downtown Lincoln is an understatement. The city is looking at the whole project costing $344 million by the time all the infrastructure work is done.
