Despite Mayor Kevin Johnson's decision to appoint a task force to plan a new Sacramento arena, Cal Expo officials extended their development deal with the NBA for an additional six months.
The deal calls for the NBA and the Cal Expo Board to work together to find a development partner that would plan and finance a overhaul of the Expo's Fairgrounds site in Sacramento, using some of the proceeds to build a new arena for the Sacramento Kings. To date a search for that partner has been a shutout; the new agreement extends the original agreement by six months.
We're not sure six months will make much of a difference anyway. We've heard some of the NBA's other partners, like AEG, have passed on the notion of a new Sacramento arena; the numbers don't really work, and the bad economy isn't inspiring anyone to take a chance on Sacramento.
