With work set to begin today, the Atlanta Hawks are moving forward with their extensive multi-phase renovation to Philips Arena.
Originally announced last fall, the deal for the $192.5 million renovation was given final approval by the Atlanta City Council on Monday. Now that the city’s vote is in place, the Hawks have indicated that they will begin work on Tuesday, marking the start of a period that will see the arena close for about four months.
Under this plan, Philips Arena will be renovated over multiple phases and should be completed in time for the 2018-19 NBA season. The renovation schedule will allow the Hawks to continue using the arena during the NBA season, and the club is already planning to make changes to some of its premium areas in time for the 2017-18 campaign. More from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
The $192.5 million remaking of the 18-year-old arena will be spread over two Hawks off-seasons, ultimately resulting in an array of new amenities, improved basketball sight-lines, connected concourses and, perhaps most notably, removal of the wall of suites on one side of the building.
The first phase, to be completed in October, will include the renovation of about 10,000 square feet of premium club spaces and the demolition of about 100,000 square feet of interior space, according to the Hawks’ building-permit application.
The funding model calls for the Hawks to contribute $50 million toward the project’s cost, and to cover any cost overruns, while the city will pay the remaining $142.5 million. In addition, the Hawks will agree to a lease that keeps them in Philips Arena until at least 2046.
The Philips Arena renovation is not the only project taking place at an existing NBA venue this summer. The Utah Jazz are making significant changes to Vivint Smart Home Arena, while the Minnesota Timberwolves are working to complete their multi-phase renovation to the Target Center.
