Tonight North Carolina and Michigan State will square off at perhaps the most unusual arena ever built: the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson, with President Barack Obama in attendance.
Normally the 1,094-foot-long flight deck is home to fighter jets, but tonight it will be outside San Diego and be the base for 7,000 seats, a scoreboard and a court last used for the 2011 NCAA Championship. The two programs will launch their 2011-2012 seasons in what could be their most challenging conditions ever. Though the ship is stable — so swaying won’t be an issue — winds might be. More on this fascinating game from the Los Angeles Times.
The game is on ESPN tonight at 7 p.m. ET. The network and Morale Entertainment is picking up the tab.
