Mellon Arena roof may be opened one last time

Mellon ArenaAs the Pittsburgh Penguins prepare for a move to a new arena, the final days of Mellon Arena are at hand — and the place may go out with a bang, as officials look at opening the retractable roof for the final concert at the Igloo.

The roof has not been opened since 1995. There are some technical reasons for this: the center-hung scoreboard relies on cables permanently attached to the roof, and opening the roof means disrupting these cables.

It would be very, very cool if the arena’s retractable roof — one of the must unique features ever found in an NHL arena — would be opened one last time.
