Bossier City struggles with arena deficits

CenturyTel Center has been running at a loss since opening in 2000, but city officials seem willing to let the facility lose money even in the face of a budget deficits.

As Bossier City (La.) officials struggle to close a large deficit in the city's budget, one target has emerged: the budget for CenturyTel Center, the home of the Bossier City-Shreveport Mudbugs (CHL) and other high-profile community events.

The amount of the deficit has been $665,985 since 2000, and the arena is expected to lose around $70,000 this year. These numbers are a tad misleading, however: the arena posted a $700,000+ loss after Hurricane Katrina, so take that out of the equation and the arena has actually run at a profit.

Still, that's a little meaningless when the city is facing deficits both on the city level and for the arena.
