New Lexington-area arena proposed

As Lexington and the University of Kentucky plan an even bigger arena to replace Rupp Arena, officials in nearby Georgetown say a smaller facility could fill a vital niche in the area.

If the big boys zig one way, the smart business plan is to zag.

That's the philosophy in Georgetown, Ky., where officials are pitching residents on a new 6.500-seat arena. As Lexington and the University of Kentucky plan an even bigger arena to replace Rupp Arena, officials in nearby Georgetown say a smaller facility could fill a vital niche in the area.

The City Council has already approved setting up a TIF district for the arena and retail center; the next step is to apply to the state for approval and additional funds. If approved, a groundbreaking could come in 2010.

It doesn't look like sports are seen as part of the mix yet; the emphasis is on local events and touring shows too small to play at Rupp Arena.
