Calling a proposal to build a new arena at the Cal Expo site a long shot, Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is forming a task force to come up with a more realistic arena plan.
This is quite the shift for the city, who had previously backed a proposal for a developer to build an NBA arena as part of a redevelopment of the Cal Expo Fairgrounds. It's become clear in recent weeks that the plan had virtually no chance of succeeded.
So Johnson — a former NBA player turned politician — says he's forming a new task force to come up with a workable arena plan. No specifics, yet, but the formation of such an arena is a setback for the Sacramento Kings: it means the city is starting again from scratch.
