ACC shifts b-ball tourney to Philips from Georgia Dome

Declining attendance caused Atlantic Coast Conference officials to conclude they won't need the 40,000 seats available at the Georgia Dome any time soon.

Declining attendance and the possibility of a continued economic slump caused Atlantic Coast Conference officials to move the 2012 men's basketball tournament to Philips Arena from the Georgia Dome.

Attendance at the tourney has declined in recent years; last year a little more than 26,000 fans showed up for each session. With no economic rebound in the forecast, ACC officials opted for the intimacy of Philips Arena — which holds 20,000 — over the cavernous Georgia Dome, where even 40,000 fans can get swallowed up in the vastness of the place.
