New Barclays Center designs unveiled, with plenty of flash and access

A new design for Barclays Center, the proposed new home of the New Jersey Nets, has been revised to incorporate more glitz and increase street accessibility. Will the third try be the charm for the long-awaited Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn? We'll know by the end of the year. The third time can be the charm, as we're seeing from the third attempt at a workable design of Barclays Center, the centerpiece of developer Bruce Ratner's 22-acre Atlantic Yards project, unveiled last week.

The original design of the arena and the surrounding office/retail/residential complex was done by the legendary Frank Gehry; after that design proved to be too spendy, Ellerbe Becket came in with a more traditional arena design. That traditional design didn't sit too well with city officials and architectural critics.
