Phoenix RoadRunners to shut down operations at end of season

Another casualty of the contracting hockey world: the Phoenix RoadRunners will suspend operations at the end of the regular season.
The Phoenix RoadRunners (ECHL) announced today that they have informed the ECHL Board of Governors that they will cease operations at the conclusion of the 2008-09 playing season.

"On behalf of the RoadRunners, I would like to thank all of the loyal season ticket holders, marketing partners, and fans that have supported our team over the past four seasons," said Ben Weber, Vice President of Business Operations.

Owned and operated by the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association, the RoadRunners returned to the ice as a member of the ECHL in 2005-06 and advanced to the Kelly Cup Playoffs in 2007.

Not a surprise, really: the team has never drawn well at US Airways Arena, even with the promotional support of the Suns.
