The first round of contracts for the construction of the new arena at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center has the money going mostly to local firms.
Out of the $24 million awarded yesterday, eight of the 11 contracts are going to firms in northern Minnesota, fulfilling the city’s pledge that the new arena would be an economic stimulus. For instance, 50 members of the Laborers Local 1901 will be working on prep work for the arena site.
The total cost of the new arena will be $57 million. Most of the funding comes from a city sales tax.
