Owner Farrel Miller took a chance by spending $3 million on the St. John’s Fog Devils and moving them to 3,780-seat Verdun Auditorium, where other junior and pro teams died. After $500,000 in arena renovations, the new Juniors attracted 2,000 season-ticket holders and five sellouts. Community support was strong, with 50 sponsors signed up, and the team promoting community engagements. The Juniors responded with a 34-30-4 record and a playoff berth.
