After decades of planning and lobbying, the University of Texas-Arlington is moving ahead with a downtown arena.

The school is spending $73 million on a new arena and events center, located on the edge of downtown Arlington. The issue always has been whether there’s demand for an arena — the school’s current home holds 3,200 00 — and even though there are a plethora of venues in the greater Dallas arena, UT-Arlington officials felt confident they could sell enough seats and bring more business to downtown Arlington to warrant the investment.
