After three years and two hurricanes, the University of New Orleans basketball team is looking forward to a return to Lakefront Arena, as the city takes another step toward normalcy.
First Hurricate Katrina forced the Privateers into another campus home — the Human Performance Center — for three seasons while Lakefront Arena was being renovated. Just when it looked like the team would be back home (the arena actually opened for other events in the spring), Hurricane Gustav sweeps through the area and causes more damage.
But there’s a happy ending. The arena will open in the middle of November, as a much-improved facility, with a new roof, new seating, a new lighting system and more.
