History
American Airlines Center was designed by David M. Schwarz/Architectural Services and HKS. The design team combined architecture and technology to give Dallas a beautiful, fan-friendly venue with a variety of high-tech capabilities. The facility will serve as the backdrop to what will soon become Dallas’ most vibrant urban gathering space.

Originally the site of an old power plant and abandoned railyard, the 20,000-seat center opened in July of 2001, replacing the Reunion Arena as the home for the Dallas Stars (NHL) the Dallas Mavericks (NBA), and the Dallas Desperados (AFL). The Environmental Protection Agency praised the site as an ideal example of making an old industrial area reusable again.

The building’s four lobbies are points of references as each has its own theme. The American Airlines Lobby oversees the public plaza and has spectacular views of the downtown skyline, the North Lobby looks toward the Design District, the East Lobby faces the Crescent complex, and the West Lobby view stretches over Stemmons Freeway to the Trinity River.
