Lincoln arena vote deadline extended three years

The city of Lincoln will have until 2012 to persuade residents to approve plans for a new Haymarket arena and convention center, according to a new plan being floated in the Nebraska Legislature.The city of Lincoln will have until 2012 to persuade residents to approve plans for a new Haymarket arena and convention center, according to a new plan being floated in the Nebraska Legislature.

The original plan was to ask Lincoln voters to approve the broad outlines of a new-arena plan this May, but that plan was scrapped because of the economy. Now the city has the option to put the issue to a vote in 2010 or 2012.

The current plan is for a $400-million facility in the city’s Haymarket area, to be mostly funded by tax-increment financing.
