It could be the Winnipeg Jets as the name of the team beginning play in 2011-2012, as David Thomson, a co-owner of the team who happens to be the richest man in Canada, calls the moniker “a fine name.”
He made his comments to the Winnipeg Free Press.
“I think the Jets is a fine name,” Thomson said. “(The team’s name) is something we will have to think hard about. And swiftly.”
It will be interesting to see what name is chosen. Previous stories coming out of Winnipeg had True North Sports and Entertainment folks saying Manitoba would be part of the team name, but that doesn’t seem to be a lock any longer. The team could probably lay claim to the Jets’ history, ranging from Bobby Hull and Anders Hedberg to Thomas Steen and Dale Hawerchuk. Public sentiment is certainly with the Jets; let’s see if TNSE heeds the passion.
