Future of Civic Arena still under debate

The fate of Civic Arena, the landmark arena in Pittsburgh, is still under debate, as the Pittsburgh Historic Review Commission continues to debate over whether to grant it landmark status.

The commission has already given preliminary approval for landmark status, meaning the City-Allegheny Sports & Exhibition Authority cannot tear down the facility to make way for redevelopment. At a meeting yesterday, authority members heard testimony regarding the arena’s future.

Proponents of preservation cited the arena’s cutting-edge design and retractable roof as reasons to avoid demolition; opponents say the building is not financially feasible and does not meet one of the 10 criteria for historic preservation.

A final vote is expected next month.
