Orlando mulls doubling of parking fees at new Magic arena

Amway CenterWhen Amway Center opens next season, Orlando Magic fans are going to be in for a rude surprise if they want to park close to the arena: the city of Orlando may double rates at two parking garages.

The city is mulling a $20 charge for parking at two arenas adjacent to Amway Center, slated to open next season a the new home of the Magic. This past season the city charged $10 for parking in ramps close to Amway Arena, but for many years the charge there was $5. Add in some expected ticket hikes and steep rises in concession charges, and going to a Magic game becomes a much more expensive proposition.

Of course, fans won’t be forced to park at South Street Garage behind the arena or the the Church Street Garage; they can park a few blocks away (to the east of the arena, across I-4) and walk to the arena. Downtown Orlando is a pretty safe area, and the walk don’t be too onerous; besides, making fans walk by the bars and restaurants in the arena district means there’s a better chance they’ll drop in for a snort. So, if the price rates are approved (the city council will be considering the proposition in coming weeks), in theory everyone will be a winner. Except for those of limited means.
