Name for new Greenville team draws more than 5,000 entries

ECHLThe newest team in the ECHL — the relocating Johnstown Chiefs, setting up shop in Greenville’s Bi-Lo Center — has attracted more than 5,000 entries to a name-the-team contest.

That’s a pretty impressive number. Greenville is a pretty good sports town, despite the folding of an earlier ECHL team — the Sally League’s Greenville Drive is one the most successful minor-league baseball teams out there — and the Bi-Lo Center is a good facility, so it’s no surprise the team is drawing such support.

At the end of the day, residents compiled 5,096 entries and 1,820 unique names. Some of the submitted names include the Reedy River Rats (Reedy River runs through town), Carolina Ice Mice and Greenville Copperheads.

The winning entry will be announced in a June 25 event.
