Notre Dame arena renovations complete

The renovation of Notre Dame's Joyce Center is virtually complete, but the dedication won't come until Jan. 1, 2010.

The renovation of Notre Dame's Joyce Center is virtually complete, but the dedication won't come until Jan. 1, 2010.

The home of volleyball and basketball teams at the University of Notre Dame has bee made over thanks to a contribution from Philip J. Purcell III, an alumnus and trustee. Gone is the bleacher seating in the arena, while a new three-story signature entrance has been added.

The court and seating will be known as Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.

The downside: seating at the arena was reduced by some 2,000 seats from 11,418 (no, we don't yet have a specific seat count). That sort of shrinkage is highly unusual in college sports, and the new arena will be one of the smallest in the Big East, where the Irish complete in basketball.

The project was ready for the sports teams and spectators on Oct. 16; the formal opening for the project isn't until Jan. 1, 2010.
