Ellerbe Becket to oversee Nets arena design

Big shoes to fill, as the architecture firm replaces icon Frank Gehry as designer of controversial New Jersey Nets arena in Brooklyn.

Ellerbe Becket will have some big shoes to fill after it was announced the Minneapolis architecture firm would replace legendary Frank Gehry as designed of a new New Jersey Nets (NBA) arena in Brooklyn.

One thing is clear: Ellerbe Becket will be charged with bringing in the arena close to the original $500 million budget, rather than the $950 million some estimated Gehry's futuristic design would entail.

"The current economic climate is not right for this design, and with Frank's understanding, the arena is undergoing a redesign that will make it more limited in scope," said arena developer Bruce Ratner in a statement.
