Pens install refrigeration units for playoffs

Not that we don’t enjoy playoff games conducted in a heavy fog, but the Pittsburgh Pengiuns are installing refrigeration units to ensure a cool house for the conference championships.

Not that we don’t enjoy playoff games conducted in a heavy fog, but the NHL’s Pittsburgh Pengiuns are installing six portabale refrigeration units to ensure a cool house for the conference championships.

Mellon Arena, built in 1964, has some known issues with maintaining decent ice when the weather’s warm outside. WIth temperatures in the 80s in Pittsburgh this week, there exists the possibility of bad ice and fog during games 1 and 2 of th Eastern Conference championships, starting Thursday.

It will cost the Pens $75,000 to keep the units through the playoffs if the team reaches the Stanley Cup round — and we’re guessing ownership won’t mind.
