SMG management deal in Albany up for extension

The Albany County Legislature will debate a 10-year extension for SMG’s management deal with the Times Union Center. The Albany County Legislature will debate a 10-year extension for SMG’s management deal with the Times Union Center.

In general, both sides have viewed the existing management deal as being a success; it dates back to 1990 when the facility opened as the Knickerbocker Arena. By extending the current deal, it makes the process a no-bid affair.

SMG is sweetening the terms of the deal for the county, however: it will be paying $100,000 more annually to the county and decreasings its management fee by $50,000 annually, basically putting $150,000 more into county coffers.

The arena is home to the Albany River Rats (AHL).
