ECHL, USHL eying Youngstown

Youngstown officials are weighing three options for Chevrolet Centre lease, including interest from USHL and ECHL teams; a naming-rights deal for the arena remains elusive.

Bruce Zoldan, owner of Phantom Fireworks and the NAHL’s Mahoning Valley Phantoms — who played several games at Chevrolet Centre this season — has expressed interest in bringing a United States Hockey League team to Chevrolet Centre. Another group has proposed an ECHL franchise; these two proposals are deemed the most serious by city officials. There’s a third proposal floating around out there, and we’re guessing it has to do with the International League.

Despite the interest from potential tenants, a naming-rights deal for the arena remains elusive. GM decided not to renew its naming-rights deal, but officials remain optimistic about landing a new sponsor.
