Dayton Bombers to suspend operations

Owner Costa Papista says he can’t continue losing money on operations but will continue to work on a new downtown arena.
The Dayton Bombers (ECHL) are suspending operations when their regular season ends Saturday, as owner Costa Papista says he can’t continue losing money on operations but will continue to work on a new downtown arena.

The Bombers are the longest-tenured team in the ECHL; having fielded squads for 18 seasons. He has until next summer to tell league officials whether the Bombers will be back in the league.

Dayton is a pretty good sports town; the Dayton Dragons are an institution in minor-league baseball and set the record for most consecutive sellouts. The Dragons had worked to bring an AHL team to a new suburban arena, but those efforts fell short.
