Gillett considering sale of Habs

A big move into the sports-ownership world hasn’t really worked out for George Gillett: his attempt to partner with the Montreal Impact for MLS fell through, his partnership with Tom Hicks with Liverpool FC has been marked by feuds, and now he’s debating whether to sell one of the crown jewels in sports franchises: the Montreal Canadiens.A big move into the sports-ownership world hasn’t really worked out for George Gillett: his attempt to partner with the Montreal Impact for MLS fell through, his partnership with Tom Hicks with Liverpool FC has been marked by feuds, and now he’s debating whether to sell one of the crown jewels in sports franchises: the Montreal Canadiens, as well as Bell Centre.

Selling during a down market is always an iffy proposition, so things must be fairly bad for Gillett to want to liquidate the Habs. Gillett owns Bell Centre outright and 80.1 percent of the Canadiens.
