Unexpected costs forced the Louisville Arena Authority to spend $4.8 million of the $11.3 million set aside in contingency funds for the new downtown facility.
The unexpected costs are mostly related to unexpected footings found under an office building and an electrical substation. Little was known about the site before the actual demolition of the buildings began, and that work uncovered the remains of a railroad station, complete with trestles and a large concrete slab.
Despite the unexpected outlay, authority officials say they still have enough in reserve.
