At a time when many hockey teams struggle to maintain attendance levels, the Fort Wayne Komets (IHL) are bucking the economic downtown by drawing more fans in than a year ago.

The Komets are drawing 7,990 fans a game so far this season. That’s a remarkable stat for two reasons: 1) the core of the team’s big nights of the season are still coming up; and 2) that figure is a bump over last year’s average attendance of 7,711.

It’s no secret many teams are struggling in the down economy. Only two minor-league teams are averaging more than 7,000 fans a game besides the Komets: the amazing Hersey Bears (at 8.474 fans a game) and the Manitoba Moose (7,326), both AHL teams.
