Palin greeted with cheers, boos at Flyers home opener

Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin was greeted with a mixed chorus of boos and cheers when she dropped the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers home opener last night at the Wachovia Center.
Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin was greeted with a mixed chorus of boos and cheers when she dropped the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers home opener last night at the Wachovia Center.

Palin is a self-described "hockey mom" running with John McCain.

Her appearance was polarizing to an extent. She was invited by Flyers owner Ed Snider, a businessman well-known for his support of the Republican Party. And many in the Philly area decried the use of a publicly financed and funded arena for what was described as a campaign stop.

The criticism may be over the top. Politicians make appearances like this all the team, and no matter what you think of her, she is the Republican nominee for vice president. If Joe Biden had dropped by to drop the puck, no one would have been protesting the appearance.

The Toronto Star calls it a political gaffe. So does that well-known haven of liberals, Forbes.

Some hockey moms showed up at the arena to boo Palin.

Earlier in the day Palin was greeted more warmly by a partisan crowd at Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown.
