Debate over new Moose Jaw arena continues

A replacement for Moose Jaw’s Civic Centre is still up for debate, as residents squabble over the cost and the scope of the project.
A replacement for Moose Jaw’s Civic Centre is still up for debate, as residents squabble over the cost and the scope of the project.

That the Civic Centre, known as the "Crushed Can," needs replacing is not really debatable: the WHL has threatened to pull games from the subpar facility. In 2006 a referendum approved city, provincial and national funding for a replacement facility. But disagreements over cost overruns delayed that project.

And a new referendum threatens to derail it again. On Monday the Moose Jaw City Council was presented with more than 4,200 residents seeking a new referendum. It’s hard to imagine Moose Jaw — a community where hockey is an important sport — rejecting a new arena. But the process is the process, and it may be months before we know will happen.
