Calgary businessman Bill Gallacher has put in a bid to buy the Winter Hawks and is seeking league approval, which is expected to be granted at the league board of govenors meetings next week. Gallacher is already involved in the hockey world as a senior partner with the Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL).
A new owner would probably do the Winter Hawks good. The Winter Hawks franchise was once one of the leading draws in the WHL, attracting huge crowds to the Rose Garden. After some changes in the owners’ suite — some real, some aborted — interest in the team waned, and it’s now a secondary tenant in the Rose Garden complex, playing most of its games at the smaller and less-attractive Memorial Coliseum.
