There is no new arena in Coastal Carolin’s immediate future. But the school is holding out hope there will be.
For now, plans for a new basketball facility at Coastal Carolina are … well … just plans. Kimbel Arena, the curent home of the Chanticleers, holds just 1,039 spectators. That makes it one of the smallest NCAA Divisioin I facilities in the country. CCU, which has made the NCAA men’s basketball tournament before, was hoping to change all that with a plan for a new 7,000 seat arena that would be shared with an ECHL hockey team.
Nice idea but the funding hasn’t worked out as well as hoped. CCU athletic director Moose Koegel recently announced that $500,000 that was in a fund for the new arena would be used to put lights on the school’s baseball facility, Watson Stadium. But Koegel also said the arena plan is not "defunct" and that plans for a new arena are still alove. They’re just plans for now.
