Attendance at Corpus Christi IceRays games is down ever so slightly this season — only 130 fans a game — but with the drastically lowered operating costs engendered by the move from the pro CHL to the amateur NAHL, the team is on a much more solid financial footing.
The team cut a slew of costs with the move, ranging from player salaries to housing costs. Making the move saved the team an estimated $500,000 right off the bat, and the team now has a solid chance of turning a profit.
Selling junior hockey was tough at first; it’s definitely a lower level of play than the CHL, but it’s also considered to be a higher-energy play as well; sometimes those old veterans in the CHL tend to coast a little.
