Nevada Legislature to consider arena sales tax

Las Vegas StripProponents of a nine-tenths-of-a-cent sales tax to fund a new arena behind Imperial Palace, just off the Strip, garnered enough signatures in Nevada’s three congressional districts to force the Nevada Legislature to take up the proposal in the upcoming session.

The sales tax would be implemented in the general vicinity of the Strip, mostly impacting tourists. The proposal must be considered by the Legislature; if no action is taken it will be presented to voters.

A nonprofit group working with Caesars Entertainment is pitching the public funding for the facility. It’s already being opposed by existing arena owners (MGM Grand, Boyd Gaming) as posing unfair competition to their privately financed facilities.

This isn’t the only arena project being pitched for Las Vegas and Clark County; Mayor Oscar Goodman has been talking with Cordish about a downtown arena, while another group seeks a small amount of public funding for a new arena on the former Wet ‘N Wild site.
