Construction of new Duluth arena ahead of schedule — slightly

Construction of a new arena at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center is ahead of schedule by two weeks — but that could easily be wiped out with one bad stretch of weather this winter.

Construction of the new arena, slated to house University of Minnesota-Duluth and high-school hockey, began last April. The infrastructure is almost done, and the next goal is enclosing the structure by January. Making that next deadline will perhaps be the most challenging of the entire building schedule: outdoor construction in Minnesota in December and January is always a crapshoot of sorts: one long stretch of bad weather (i.e. freezing rain and the like) and the project construction is delayed. That's why officials aren't exactly celebrating about being ahead of schedule by two weeks.

The new arena is slated to open in December 2010.
