Walleye take ice for first time; thousands tour new Toledo arena

Over 8,500 fans showed up for a tour of the new Lucas County Arena and a peek at the new Toledo Walleye.

It was a festive atmosphere in downtown Toledo as over 8,500 fans toured the new Lucas County Arena Sunday and took in the first practice for the Toledo Walleye (ECHL).

In general, the $105-million facility seems to be over well with all involved. In a way, it's hard to see the facility not succeeding: it's being operated by the same folks who run the successful Toledo Mud Hens baseball team. Here's the viewpoint of Walleye goaltender John Petrous:

"They brought a lot of energy, and it gives you a rush. I think the fans are excited for it because it's been a couple of years without it. It's a beautiful arena. I've never seen anything like it. The facility is awesome. Everything is state-of-the-art. There's nothing more the players on this team could ask for."
