Evansville arena renderings released

Renderings for a new downtown Evansville arena were released by the city and architect Populous.

The design follows the most recent trends in arena designs: lot of wide concourses and glass windows. The progenitor for all this style, really, is Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul, and recent arenas under construction in Pittsburgh, Wichita and Duluth follow that trend.

The appeal is obvious. With lots of glass, fans inside won't feel claustrophobic as they wander the concourses. And at night the arena is a big, giant advertisement for itself, serving as a beacon to the surrounding area.

The new arena will seat 11,000 for concerts (6,000 in the lower bowl), 10,000 for basketball and 9,000 for hockey, and be located in downtown Evansville next to the current Executive Inn hotel, which will be scaled back and incorporated in the site plan. The final arena will sit eight stories tall and incorporate 278,000 square feet of space.
