A downtown arena apparently isn't in the cards for Sioux Falls, as a Events Center Task Force is recommending a new 15,000-seat arena be built near the current arena at the city's convention-center/arena complex.
A downtown arena apparently isn't in the cards for Sioux Falls, as a Events Center Task Force is recommending a new 15,000-seat arena be built near the current arena at the city's convention-center/arena complex.
The task force's recommended site is the current Howard Wood Field, with the new arena connected to the current convention center and Sheraton hotel. (Also in the proximity: the city's ballpark.) Seating 15,000, the arena could attract the big-name acts unable to squeeze into Sioux Falls Arena, which would be kept and possibly renovated under the plan.
Whether there's demand in Sioux Falls for a $150-million arena is the big question. The arena's current sports occupants do very well, but there's a reason you don't find USHL or minor-league arena football teams playing in big venues. Still, Sioux Falls is a growing community and is a regional center.
