Will Rockford bring in outside management for MetroCentre?

Facing both short-term cash-flow problems and long-term operational issues, Rockford (Ill.) city officials say everything is on the table regarding the future of MetroCentre, the downtown home of the Rockford IceHogs (AHL).

Some of the problems are addressable: 11 suites opened too late to make much of an impact to the facility’s bottom line last year. But there’s still the issue of selling the suites at a whopping $45,000 annually. And then there’s the issue of selling naming rights to the facility, which could bring in $400,000 annually.

Together, the new revenues would not be enough to wipe out an annual $912,000 subsidy from the city or pay back a $600,000 loan. That’s why everything will be on the table as city officials map out the future of the city, and we’d assume that means bringing in professional management.
